Jean-Baptiste Pillement is one of the most influential artists of the French Rococo. His favorite subjects included the addition of landscape painting Chinoiserie, for this painting in grisaille from the mid-1770s is exemplary in his work. Chinoiserie, the Western interpretation of oriental imagery and cultural life, came in the 18th Century in the courtly arts of Europe greatly in vogue. The collectors loved the exoticism of these representations with the vast landscapes and the fine, quietly moving figures
