Édouard Manet
Irma Brunner in a Black Hat, (The Viennese), c. 1880, pastel on paper, Louvre, Paris.
Between 1879 and 1882, Manet produced a stunning series of pastel portraits of women. This medium offered him freshness, lively colour and a powdered material that flattered the face more than paint.
Here Irma Brunner embodies all the elegance of the 1880s, which she radiates in abundance. Manet chooses a decorative style that also recalls the Italian portraits of the 15th century. Everything is contrasted and outlined: the profile of her face and velvety black hair, her pink blouse standing out against the grey background. The touch of red on her lips spices up and adds a certain piquancy to this elegant harmony.

Marchesa Casati, 1919, oil on canvas, the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) in Toronto.
Luisa Casati was an eccentric Italian heiress, muse, and patroness of the arts in early 20th century Europe. As the concept of dandy was expanded to include women, she fitted the utmost female example by saying: “I want to be a living work of art”.
A celebrity and femme fatale, marchesa’s famous eccentricities dominated and delighted European society for nearly three decades. The beautiful and extravagant hostess to the Ballets Russes was something of a legend among her contemporaries. She astonished society by parading with a pair of leashed cheetahs and wearing live snakes as jewelry.

Melancholia in Arcadia by Dutch artist Gabriel Lester.
Installed in Istanbul in 2011, the work is comprised of a series of lace curtains that appear to billow, yet the windows are closed….Lester achieved the effect through the use of a textile hardener, effectively freezing the curtains in place and time.
